Measles, once thought to be nearly eliminated, is a viral illness that can be life threatening or be associated with severe medical complications in some individuals. Measles has made a national comeback — and Las Vegas families should know what to look for. Because measles spreads easily through the air, even a brief exposure can cause infection in someone who isn’t immune.
At Las Vegas Integrative Dermatology, we focus on whole-patient wellness — from skin to immune health — and we believe that awareness and prevention are key to protecting our patients and community.
⚠️ Early Measles Symptoms to Watch For
Measles usually begins with symptoms that mimic a cold or flu before the rash appears. Watch for:
Fever
Cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes
Tiny white or bluish spots inside the mouth (Koplik spots)
Fatigue, irritability, or loss of appetite
🌡️ The Rash: What It Looks Like
Begins on the face and hairline, spreading downward to the chest, arms, and legs
Appears as flat red spots, sometimes with raised bumps
Spots may merge together as they spread
Lasts 5–6 days
Measles can lead to serious complications such as ear infections, pneumonia, dehydration, or brain inflammation (encephalitis).
🚨 When to Seek Medical Attention
If you or your child develop fever, cough, and rash after possible exposure — especially after recent travel — seek medical care immediately. If you are concerned about measles, call the medical facility before arriving if possible. Infection precautions may be necessary. Measles is very contagious!
🌿 Integrative Immune Support
While vaccination remains the cornerstone of prevention, overall immune wellness helps your body fight infections more effectively.
We emphasize:
Strengthening and optimizing gut health. Our gut health directly impacts our overall health, and skin health. We offer gut microbiome testing.
Eating 30+ grams of fiber a day, eating the "rainbow" of fruits and vegetables, Selecting whole foods over processed foods
Vitamin and mineral optimization – especially vitamin D, zinc, and antioxidants.
Adequate sleep and stress management, keep your immune system strong and ready to fight viruses like Measles.
Stress reduction
Exercise
